Rally and Open Rally:
What is Rally?

AKC Rally is the new dog sport that is taking the nation by storm, a successful stepping stone from the AKC Canine Good Citizen® program to the world of obedience or agility. Rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is fun and energizing. The canine team moves at their own pace, very similar to rally-style auto racing. Rally was designed with the traditional pet owner in mind, but it can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition.

A rally course includes 10 to 20 stations, depending on the level. Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. Communication between handler and dog is encouraged and perfect heel position is not required, but there should be a sense of teamwork between the dog and handler. The main objective of rally is to produce dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs, in a manner that will reflect positively on the sport of rally at all times and under all conditions.

This class will introduce you and your dog to the AKC sport of Rally Obedience.  You will be instructed on the rules and signs of AKC Rally Obedience...we will begin at the novice level and continue on through advanced and excellent courses over the six weeks.  Class is open to all ages and breeds of dogs, but they must have had some basic obedience and must have an understanding of heel, sit, down, come, and stay.  Class meets for six consecutive weeks.

Open rally practice is available for those wishing to just practice courses on their own.  Prerequisite is participation in Beginners Rally (with any instructor)

Workshop offers one hour of instruction and one hour to run your dog through a Novice Course as many times as time allows.  You are encourage to sign up for Open Rally Novice Run Throughs once you have attended the workshop.

Doesn't Play well with Others:
Got Aggression?  We can help!  Kim Baer of Now Who’s The Boss presents a four hour class on curbing aggression in dogs!   Whether your dog is dog aggressive, human aggressive, fear aggressive, territorial, possessive or generally intolerant, we have solutions that can help get your feisty Fido on the path to success, as you define it.

This will be a four hour class.  The first two hours will focus on working the dogs out physically, the remainder of the class will be a combination of exercises and games to exercise the dog mentally as well as physically to give your dog a chance to show you they don't have to always react to certain triggers .

We will be utilizing the LIME approach ( Least Invasive, Most Effective).  While some exercises are simple redirection, others may require a more hands on route, clearly defining appropriate responses and behaviors to the individual triggers.  Our primary goal will be to get the dog to be more cognitive, rather than reactive, followed by transitioning the dog back into your control and giving you the tools, knowledge and confidence to carry on the training!

Class requirements for this class are you must be able to handle a physical hike, maybe even a bike ride, you must have a properly fitted muzzle for your dog for some of the close encounter games (the dog must be introduced to the muzzle prior to class), the dog needs to be hungry so don't feed them that morning, bring the dogs favorite treat and toy.  Other instructions will be provided upon registration.

K9 Nose Work:  The next urban sport for dogs...

Teaching nose work from the working dog persective for the pet dog!

What is K9 Nose Work?
Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt.  The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop your dog's natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise.  It's a great way for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy.

The best thing about this sport is anyone can participate physical requirements are minimal for the handler as well as any dog (deaf and/or blind dogs are welcome).

The picture on the left is Turner, from the K9 Nose Works website.  The founders of this sport are Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot, and Jill-Marie O'brien.  Feel free to visit the National Associatin of Canine Scent Work which describes the titles and rules for the sport.

My goal is to become a certified instructor with NACSW, I'm currently as Associate Nose Work Instructor (ANWI).  I do have experience in scent work as I was a volunteer K9 Handler in Search and Rescue since 2001.  I've attended more than 1,500 hours of training in search and rescue disciplines such as Trailing, Airscent, Cadaver, and HRD.  Additional instructors assisting me in these classes will also have either Search and Rescue or Narcotics and  Explosives Detection experience.
